Prepare for class
1. Indoor only sneakers. Because we are guests at the White Barn Studio, we shall bring our shoes in and change there, in order to preserve their dance floor. Dirt, gravel and debris can damage the hardwood and we want to be welcomed guests for a long time to come! Pick a pair of sneakers as your "dance shoes," clean them thoroughly, and bring them with you to change into after you arrive. 2. Wear comfortable workout type clothes that you can move freely in. You will sweat and it is ideal to wear materials that won't drag you down. Wicking material is ideal ... but you can experiment with what feels good for you. 3. Water. I will have a couple bottles of emergency water with me, but there are no water fountains or bubblers at the studio. 4. Hand towel. We will work up a sweat but will take small breaks to towel off!
Whether you have never step foot in a group fitness class, or you are a Zumba veteran, it is ideal to come to a class to see if the Feisty Siren brand of dance fitness is right for you! All Zumba classes have a few things in common:A routine based heavily in Latin music with dances that have a Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, and Reggaton influence. Non-verbal instruction - the entire class either "follow the leader," or do what feels good for you! Non-verbal leadership allows you to focus on your body movements rather than the sound of my voice or verbal instructions. You DO NOT need one ounce of dance experience to join a Zumba class. You simply learn by following along, experiencing, and through repetition. There is never any judgment about your physical capabilities, your coordination, or how you look when you dance. You are here to express yourself, move your body, feel your own vitality, and to feel safe and free to be YOU!
Song choices - including those beyond typical Zumba songs (Hint: I'm a Gen X-er who grew up in the 90s!)Dance choices - including what dance styles, in addition to the core latin dances, are included. (Hint: I like hip-hop, earthy grounded move, and hippy belly dance shake and shimmies!)Sequence and flow of the classThe instructor's vibes and energyThe energy of the space, room, studioThe group dynamics of participants With all these variables at play, the best way to find your favorite class is to try out different classes and instructors to see what best suits you! Feisty Siren always gives the first class for free to help you find your vibe and your tribe.
What to expect from a Feisty Siren class: To see the same routine over the course of 4-6 weeks so that you can learn the dances and find your personal flare! Routines that are set for a moderate intensity. They can be downgraded by going into a side step or downplaying each move. They can be upgraded with more power, bounces, hops, and exaggerated movements. One to two new songs and dances will be introduced every 4-6 weeks. Over the course of time, old songs move out, new ones move in, and eventually we will have quite the repertoire of moves in our back pockets. Your first class may feel like "a lot" especially if you have not taken a group fitness or dance class in a while. The dances will likely be brand new to you, making you work both your fitness and your brain! Class should feel like a positive and supportive experience that is intriguing, fun, and challenging enough so that you have plenty of space to grow. Over time, you will learn the moves, making the mental part of the process much easier and you can focus on the fitness and dance portions. If you find class too easy, it may not be the best class for you. Feisty Siren is community-oriented and a positive and supportive environment - there is no competition or judgement to be the "best." Nobody who is feisty enough to dance is ever looked down upon! Dance is not about perfection. Fun and freedom in our bodies are our shared goals!
